Biography
Lillian Nave is the Faculty and Educational Development Specialist for AppState’s Hickory campus. A former Art History faculty member and Senior Lecturer in First Year Seminar who has taught at Appalachian State University in Boone since 2007, she continues to teach First Year students at the AppState’s Hickory campus while supporting faculty there. Previously, she taught at the State University of New York at Oneonta in Oneonta, NY, and Assumption University in Worcester, MA. She teaches courses in Intercultural Competence and cross-cultural studies and has connected her AppState students virtually with students in Japan, Thailand, Qatar, China, Germany, and Afghanistan. A staunch advocate of study abroad, Lillian has led adults and students abroad to Greece, Turkey, Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Lillian is especially interested in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and hosts the Think UDL podcast where she interviews practitioners around the world who create more equitable, accessible, and engaging learning environments for their students. She has published several articles on faculty development and inclusive and accessible pedagogy focussing on UDLand works with faculty to improve their teaching practices whenever she can. She is an award-winning faculty member and has been honored to receive the Faculty Global Leadership Award (2022), Rennie Brantz Award for Excellence in Teaching First Year Seminar (2019), Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2019), and the Faculty Award for Excellence in General Education Teaching Non-Tenure Track (2017).
