Using Asynchronous Content to Support the Student Experience

McIntire Associate Professor Amanda Cowen’s organizational behavior class is required for incoming third-year students. Cowen changed up the course structure in Fall 2020, with half of class sessions being in person and led by her and the other half were asynchronous and student facilitated.

McIntire Associate Professor Amanda Cowen’s organizational behavior class is required for incoming third-year students. This highly interactive and discussion-based course focuses on students’ ability to work, contribute, and lead in team-based environments. Cowen changed up the course structure in Fall 2020, with half of class sessions being in person and led by her and the other half were asynchronous and student facilitated. During the asynchronous component, teams participated in activities and discussions and worked together to meet the session deliverable. She has found that these sessions are helping to develop students’ teamwork and leadership competencies, giving them more agency in their own learning, and leading to more meaningful insights about course topics.
