UVA Health's Department of Pediatrics transitioned its morning didactic conference online in 2020. The virtual departmental-wide case conference was held on Webex, which allowed them to maintain the status of protected health information. Emily Salpini, one of the department's chief residents, says her department's overall attendance increased, representing a wider variety of specialties throughout pediatrics. The online format also enabled those who previously couldn't attend the in-person conference to participate. Additionally, Salpini says residents felt that participation was less intimidating for them in the online setting. However, a downside to the experience was the lack of social interaction and networking. Despite that, Salpini says this new format was so successful that the department is now offering a hybrid conference, with some participants in person and some on Webex.
